What a Horrible Mess!!!

I have some sad animal news to report. A couple days ago a cargo vessel collided with one of our local bridges, the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge. When this happened, the news reported only 140 gallons of bunker fuel spilled from the ship when it struck the support tower of the bridge. Later, we learned it was not only 140 gallons of oil, but instead it was 58,000 gallons!! I know I cannot count that well, but even I would know the difference between 140 vs 58,000 gallons!! Anyhow, the fuel that spilled is a really thick messy sludge. Picture tar that you just cannot get off your paws, then multiply that by 100!

The poor local birds have been affected. And, thousands of migratory birds are flying along the Pacific during this time of year. The birds are covered in oil. They are breathing it, they are drinking it, their wings and bodies are soaked in it. But, efforts are underway by various groups to try to help the birds.

This is a very sad week.

Hi, Hana
Certainly there is a difference between 14 and 58,000!!
Poor birds! That doesn't look good! Glad there are groups to help them!

Hey, Ivy left you a comment. She never visits my blog. Harrumph.

Poor birds - but peepols did a good job up here during Exxon Valdez spill so they can probably help your birds too!

Oh no, that's horrible! I get dirty but it's not as bad as all that. I sure hope those birdies get all cleaned off soon. :(

(p.s. Nope they didn't have any eskies at that trials in PA, it was only for terriers BUT I did see some last weekend in Maryland where we were doing more agility. It was cold there but they weren't complaining!)

What horrible news. I hope they are able to clean up that mess pretty quickly before too many birds (and fish) get sick or die. You better stay away from the water - I don't think your mom would like trying to clean all that oily goop off of you either.

ps. My girl says she is glad we stayed here in Phoenix - and we missed the earthquake and oil spill.

This saddens me to no end. I wish we were there to help clean up. Those poor animals don't deserve this.
