My Secretary is TOO busy!
I have had a lot to say these past 2 weeks, but my secretary has not been available to help me with my bloggy when I dictate to her. She says she has been too busy with paperwork! Oh fiddle-dee-sticks! I say just eat the paper! Today she has reserved her lunch hour to help me type the words into my bloggy, so I am taking advantage of it, but she has not downloaded my photos for me to show you yet.
If you don't have time to read all my text (because I have a lot to say, ya know?), you can just scroll down to see the old pic I posted, plus some of my Oregon friends in their new ribbon necklaces.
Sooooo, last Thurday I went to see the vet. Vet appointments are never fun, as you all know, right? If you enjoy going to the vet, please be sure to let me know so we are aware of how odd and weird you are. This appointment was to get my teeth cleaned! I have never had my teeth cleaned before and I am 7 years old, but mom says I have a lot of dirt stuck in my teeth and my gums are always very red.
She had kept putting off the teeth cleaning, but finally the day arrived. Prior to this, she wasn’t sure if she wanted to vet to use ACE. ACE is a relaxant which is used in conjunction with anesthesia. The more ACE used, the less anesthesia is used. The less ACE used, the more anesthesia. The reason why mom was so hesitant to have ACE used on me is because my breeder said ACE should not be used on Eskies, and white dogs in general, and I am a white dog says my mom. The breeder had a very bad experience with ACE on one of her dogs who is a direct relative of mine.
My mom did some research but could not find anything to support what my breeder said. The only thing she could find is that boxers should not be given ACE. But, my breeder is a reputable breeder so my mom did not know what to tell the vet regarding ACE. My parents were very confused.
In the end, my teeth got cleaned, and I was not given ACE. The vet tech said I didn’t need it… whatever that meant. My mom was so excited to see me that she forgot to ask the vet tech for more info. And my teeth are sparkling white! I survived the cleaning, plus my teeth are actually in good shape still. Okay, so I do have one loose tooth, but the vet tech said it will probably solidify in place in a couple days after the cleaning. Yeah, I do have red gums still, but mom bought an oil based CET oral hygiene rinse from the vet which is supposed to help with the cleaning. She also wants to get me CET dental chews with enzymes and is looking for a good deal on the internet, or another dog chew that also has peroxide or enzymes.
My mom was quoted the cost would be between 400 to 500 greenies! She even called another vet to see if this was normal, and their quote was in the same ballpark. Wowie Zowie, that sure is a LOT! In the end it cost about 340 greenies. (ya gotta consider my teeth were super dirty and stained and yucky) What does it cost in your part of the country? Oh yea, I was under anesthesia for 41 minutes! They said that is considered normal. Seems like a long time for me!
I’m just happy my teeth ordeal is over, for now at least.
To keep you entertained, and because my mom didn't help me download my recent pics, here is a funny old one. The pink thing is a toy porcupine. This happened when I was about 1 year old! I wonder who put the porcupine in the toilet?

And this is Taz and Kodi: Kodi seems to be all ribbon and head, hee, hee !

Hana,
We are sorry you are having so much trouble with your secretary. We have the same problems but, since we are very fond of her, we keep her anyway. Tell your mom to show us your pretty white teeth! Sammy got his teeth cleaned last year. Mom was worried about him too. She never likes to put us "under" but we have been okay.

Hana, did you get to play with your porcupine after your people rescued it from the toilet?
Comet
Hana - a couple of years ago (when I was 6) the vet told my girl that I needed to have my teeth cleaned because they were very dirty. Instead, the girl decided to switch my food to Natural Choice Dental Care. When I went back a year later, they asked where I went for my teeth cleaning, because they were so white. I'm now 8.5 yrs old and my teeth are still very white.

Comet, nope, I did not get the porcupine back! My parents through it away. But, the person who gave me the pink porcupine gave me a brand new pink porcupine! I didn't throw, I mean.... the person who threw the porcupine in the toilet didn't throw the new one in the toilet because my parents kept the toilet lid closed from then on.
BLU, do you play with raw hides? I don't like nylabones and my parents don't give me raw hides because I choke on the raw hide pieces. I think my teeth were so bad because I get a couple spoonfuls of moist canned food in the morning. Do you eat some soft foods every once in a while? I will ask my mom to check on that brand of food you mentioned.
Hana - I think rawhides are fun to throw around the house, but I really don't like eating them and the girl rarely buys them. I get about one greenie a month. I've never had canned food, but sometimes I get people food.
Sometimes I chew on nylabones, but not that often (Comet loves them). The only thing that really changed between when I had yucky brown teeth and shiny white teeth was my food. The pieces of food are bigger than most kibble - about the size of a peanut M&M, so I have to chew it instead of swallowing it whole.
Now that I have to eat special vet food, I will see if that makes my teeth get less white again.

Wow- that was a lot for a teeth cleaning- it is about $150 here. Linda had a min pin that couldn't take ACE. he would have seizures when it was given to him. But what ever it costs, it is worht. Dogs with clean teeth are much healthier than dogs with dirty teeth. Linda's min pin and pom had to have their teeth cleaned every year, but mine are still gorgeous and white, white, white!
We chew big rawhide bones, but just when we get them chewed down and nice and soggy, the Humans throw them away- drats. They are afraid we will swallow them and choke when they get little. Then we have to start all over with big ones again- sigh...
Big Wags,

Sigh..my claire said that 300-500 greenies is what most teeth scrapin's cost if you haven't had one in a while, she works for a vet, she should know. She also said the enzyme chews will really help and that if your mom doesn't like to brush your teeth, if you dip a piece of gauze in beef broth and just rub your teeth with that once a day it will keep the plaque off, she does that with me. Oh yeah, and kibble that has larger than normal chunks helps to keep teeth clean, doesn't matter what brand. And two spoonfuls of canned food is fine. :) I'm sure you have a gorgeous smile.
I am 3 years old and the last time I went to see my vet, who also lives next door to me, she said I did not need my teeth cleaned YET so my Mom does not know how much it costs. But she is going to call and find out because $340 seems way too much! She does not think it costs that much for her to have her teeth cleaned! Dr Cindy did give my Mom this green stuff to put in my water. It has enzymes in it. Mom has not been really good about putting it in there but she will now ... now that it might cost $340 if she doesn't! Geepers, am I worth that much money to her? The green stuff is "C.E.T AquaDent - Drinking Water Additive for Dogs and Cats." Miss Cindy also reccomends those enzyme rawhides. She gives them to her dogs. My Mom does not give them to me though, I wonder why??
The toilet thing was funny!
Hi Hana,
Teeth cleaning cost a lot in Singapore too. I usually get the baby sized rawhides and petite greenies to chew on to keep my teeth clean. I prefer playing with the rawhides and only eat them if I'm desperately hungry.
Please come visit my blog. I love reading yours and may I link you up?
PS : Our hoomans seem to lead a really busy life eh? Mom takes forever to upload the pics too.
